Education for Family Enterprise Owners and Stewards

The ability to successfully perform one’s role as a family enterprise owner and steward is not inherited. It has to be developed with intention.

Generation6 helps enterprising families prepare current and rising owners through tailored learning experiences that build shared language, governance literacy, stewardship capability, and readiness for responsible ownership across generations.

Why Education Matters in Family Enterprise

As families grow across generations, branches, and geographies, owners often participate with different levels of understanding, experience, and engagement. Without intentional learning, families may struggle to build the shared vocabulary, governance understanding, and stewardship mindset required for thoughtful ownership.

Shared education helps families strengthen alignment, deepen understanding of ownership responsibilities, and prepare current and rising generations for more constructive conversations around governance, succession, and long-term continuity.

Who Benefits from Ownership Education

Education can support families at different stages of ownership, governance, and generational development:

  • Current owners seeking stronger alignment around roles and responsibilities

  • Rising-generation family members preparing for future ownership

  • Sibling or cousin groups building shared understanding

  • Multi-branch families navigating different levels of engagement

  • Governance bodies seeking stronger participation and decision-making

  • Family offices, advisors, or boards supporting enterprising families

How We Support Ownership Education

Generation6 helps families strengthen stewardship capability and ownership readiness through tailored education initiatives that may stand alone or integrate into broader advisory work.

Generation6 Academy: A Flexible Learning Platform for Enterprising Families

Generation6 Academy is our online and hybrid education platform for enterprising families and their advisors. It extends our education practice by offering structured modules, short videos, reflection questions, online quizzes, and practical tools that invite both individual and collective learning.

Our educational programs are built around the specific needs of enterprising families, with or without operating businesses. We work closely with our clients to design engaging, relevant content that meets the goals of the group, whether it’s preparing the next generation, strengthening family governance, or supporting a smooth generational transition.

We know that every family is different, which is why we don’t offer cookie-cutter solutions. Instead, we co-create each program with our client families, blending short video modules, interactive workshops, and guided discussions to create a meaningful and lasting impact.

The Academy can support families as a stand-alone learning experience or as part of a broader advisory engagement, family meeting, governance initiative, succession conversation, or next-generation development program.

How Learning Comes Together: Illustrative Learning Journey

We created a learning journey for 17 family stewards and spouses across three branches and two generations, each with differing levels of understanding and engagement in the family enterprise.

Participants viewed 38 short learning videos at their own pace. Each month, upon completing each of the 12 modules, the group met for a facilitated online session to discuss their learnings and take-aways for their own family.

The journey unfolded over 12 months and concluded with an in-person family meeting designed for shared reflection and dialogue, and signing off on the roadmap for the continuing generational work:

Phase I — Shared Foundations
Family enterprise dynamics, private ownership, and the trade-offs of long-term stewardship.

Phase II — Ownership & Governance Competence
Governance fundamentals, ownership structures and responsibilities, boards and advisory bodies, and decision-making across generations and branches.

Phase III — Family Dynamics & Communication
Family dynamics, adult development, communication patterns in enterprising families, and constructive conflict management.

Phase IV — Integration, Preparation & Family Meeting
Facilitated reflection and integration, deeper discussion on priority topics, and alignment on next steps.
