Family Development Advisory for Enterprising Families

Strengthening Alignment, Communication, and Family Cohesion Across Generations

As enterprising families grow across generations, branches, and geographies, relationships often carry more weight and more complexity.

Sustaining family cohesion does not happen by default. It requires intentional dialogue, productive engagement, and the capacity to navigate change together.

Generation6 helps families strengthen the relationships and communication needed to remain connected as complexity grows.

Why Family Development Matters

Continuity depends on more than structures, plans, and agreements. It also depends on the family’s ability to stay connected, communicate productively, and remain aligned as circumstances change.

Without an intentional approach to family development, expanding enterprises face distinct relational realities:

  • Geographic & Emotional Drift: As families grow in size and across generations, branches naturally begin to drift apart geographically and emotionally.

  • The Myth of Natural Cohesion: While strong family relationships are sometimes assumed to emerge naturally, sustaining cohesion across generations requires intentional family development.

  • The Limitation of Structures: Generation6 supports families by balancing and strengthening relationships rather than relying on structural solutions alone.

  • No Generic “Best Practices”: Our approach reflects the emotional, relational, practical, and generational realities each family faces. Every family requires an approach that fits its history, values, relationships, and aspirations for the future.

Our Family Development Philosophy

Family development works best when the process fits the family. Generation6 meets families where they are and structures the work around each family’s readiness, relationships, and long-term aspirations.

Family Development in Action

Case Study: Rebuilding Cohesion in a Dispersed Fourth-Generation Family

The Challenge:
A fourth-generation family enterprise had grown to include more than forty adult family members across multiple countries and life circumstances. Many had limited involvement in the business, and relationships across branches had become distant. Some family members were beginning to question whether continued shared ownership in the family enterprise still made sense.

The Approach:
Following a family survey, Generation6 recommended beginning with relationship-building rather than governance structures. We designed a multi-year family engagement process centered on generational retreats, facilitated dialogue, shared values, and intentional connection across branches that rarely interacted.

The Outcome:
Over three years, the family strengthened its shared identity, increased engagement across branches, and created clearer pathways for family participation. The process also helped the family establish a cross-generational family council with a clear mandate and broad buy-in.
